Spring Break 2026 Free Activities and Events

Spring break in Houston doesn’t have to come with a Texas-sized price tag. From museums, picnic-perfect green spaces for camping, and kid-approved adventures just a short drive away, Houston and surrounding areas are bursting with budget-friendly fun.

Whether you’re wrangling little explorers, entertaining tweens and teens, or just looking for an excuse to get everyone outside without opening your wallet, we’ve rounded up the best free ways to make memories this spring break and enjoying good old-fashioned family fun.

Katy

Spring 2026 Community Campout- Katy

The VFW Park – 6202 George Bush Drive, Katy, TX 77493

Join us for the Spring installment of our Community Campout at VFW Park! This free overnight event begins at 4PM on Friday, March 13th through 9AM on Saturday, March 14th.

 Families with children of all ages are welcome to attend! 

Participants can enjoy the park and various activities then settle in for the evening with a hot dog dinner, provided by Parkway Fellowship North Katy, and an outdoor movie. 

Delight in some time with your fellow campers at breakfast the next morning before loading up and enjoying the rest of your weekend! 

While the event is FREE, all participants must pre-register to participate. In order to attend breakfast, you must campout overnight. If you do not want to spend the night but still would like to enjoy Friday nights festivities, you still need to register for the event.

Participants are required to bring their own tent and camping supplies. Camping trailers are prohibited. Public restrooms will be available for use. All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. No alcohol, pets, glass are allowed. 

 

Street Dance on the Square

Houston

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

What started in 1931 with a small, seven-person lunch at the Texas State Hotel has evolved into a much-loved Houston tradition and the world’s largest rodeo event.

Each year, Houston welcomes 2 million attendees for its 20-day Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™. The annual festival offers visitors fun-filled carnivals, barbecue cook-offs, wine-tasting competitions, shopping, trail rides, concerts, and, of course, action-packed bull riding. The heartwarming calf scramble is also a crowd favorite, with 28 young Texans scrambling the floor of NRG Stadium, trying to catch one of 14 calves.

Join the fun, cheering on the cowboys and cowgirls, and stick around after the nightly rodeo for performances by award-winning artists.

 

Houston Police Department Museum

The Houston Police Department museum is located in the lobby of HPD headquarters at 1200 Travis, and features unique displays and a memorial wall honoring the ultimate sacrifice made by those officers that gave their lives in the line of duty.

Included among the displays are artifacts from the Honor Guard, SWAT, Mounted Patrol, badges, uniforms and other equipment utilized over the years.

 

The Health Museum- Free Family Thursday

Art Bike Parade Workshop

Discovery Green will host a Mini Maker Workshop designed to help kids transform their bikes into parade-ready masterpieces. Led by local artists and stocked with art supplies generously provided by the Orange Show, the workshop is all about hands-on fun and big ideas. Plus, participants can enter a raffle to win bikes and helmets donated by the Orange Show.

The Houston Parks Board and the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art are rolling out the fun with the fifth annual Houston Art Bike Parade & Festival on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Fondren Park and Smither Park. This free, all-ages celebration welcomes riders of every ability to show off their most imaginative, art-covered bikes.

Exploring Energy: Think you have what it takes to be a geologist? Come help us find the mineral deposits or see how quickly you can match up rocks and minerals. When you’re done, pick out and paint your own kindness rocks.

Compudopt: Join the Steam Team and explore augmented reality or learn basic coding.

Switch Energy: Build and test play-doh electric circuits to understand how electricity flows. Then build your own windmill using recycled materials!

EOG IoT Demo: It takes many different engineering disciplines to get oil and gas out of the ground. Come enjoy a small water injection demonstration that will teach how all parts of engineering – from subsurface to fluid dynamics to mechanical engineering – work with the IoT and software to bring oil and gas to you.

Core Labs: Come by and learn about the earth’s porosity and see if you have what it takes to complete a rock matching game.

Boy Scouts – Sam Houston Area Council: Ever wonder how rockets work? Or how a butterfly glides through the air? Or maybe how a caterpillar makes its way across the ground? Come by and learn about these STEM principles through activities like a balloon rocket or make your own flying butterfly or moving caterpillar!

Breakthrough Houston: Come learn how you can actually grow seeds in a plastic bag, then stay a while and make your own dinosaur to bring home.

EOG Resources: After you’ve checked out all the activities at this year’s Discovery Green FUNomenal Spring Break camp, come back to the EOG tent to claim your prize!

Sherwood Forest Faire is a locally owned medieval-style village nestled in the Lost Pines section of Central Texas. We have over 100 permanent buildings on 25 acres, including stages, pubs, merchant shoppes, wedding venues, a complete castle, and more.

During Robin Hood’s Spring Faire, we have over 150 shows per day by more than 40 different stage acts.

Spring Break on the Square

Dates: March 10, 2026 – March 21, 2026 (Tuesday-Thursday)
Time: 11:30am – 1:30pm

Spring Break on the Square returns with complimentary entertainment every Tuesday through Thursday for two weeks, filling the Plaza with energy from 11am-1:30pm.

Each day brings something new — crowd-drawing live performances, larger-than-life characters roaming the Square, interactive experiences kids can jump right into, and just enough midweek magic to turn an ordinary weekday into something special. It’s an easy outing that keeps little ones entertained while parents catch up with friends, grab lunch nearby, and enjoy time outside.

The two-week celebration wraps up Saturday, March 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a live Demon Hunter Concert, closing the series on a high-energy note.

Reel in a great time at the 19th Annual Creekwood Fishing Derby! For this family-friendly event, we’ll bring the bait, and you bring the rods. 

Whether you’re casting a line for the first time or you’re a seasoned bass pro, anglers of all experience levels are welcome. 

This is a free catch-and-keep event, and thanks to our sponsors, the Woodlands Professional Firefighters Association, your fish can even be gutted and cleaned onsite. 

Free T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Prizes will be awarded for the longest, heaviest, and smallest fish caught, with measurements provided by the Woodlands Bass Club. Also joining us will be Neighborhood Services with MCSO to pass out some very useful information.

Make this a fun annual tradition for the whole family to enjoy!
