The San Jacinto Museum of History is offering ten $50 scholarships to the San Jacinto Symposium to Texas history teachers in the 4th and 7th grades, announced Museum president Larry Spasic, a former school teacher himself. Teachers in public and private schools in Texas are eligible.

The Symposium, a day-long forum to promote public awareness of the events of the Texas Revolution, is sponsored by the Friends of the San Jacinto Battleground. Celebrate the battle that won Texas’ independence in 1836. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the opening of the San Jacinto Monument. Completed in 1939, the San Jacinto Monument stands as a tribute to those who fought at the Battle of San Jacinto. Constructed of Cordova shellstone, the 570-foot structure is the world’s tallest war memorial – standing 15 feet taller than the Washington Monument – includes a 34-foot Texas star.
