It's That Time of Year Again:
The Holiday Gift and Activity Guide (HGAG)

As we have done now for the last, gosh, twenty some years, here comes that special section for all you out there banking on a robust holiday season. We've created a special place just for you. Here are some ideas as to which businesses should plant themselves in this year's HGAG:

  • Fall and Christmas festivals, events and activities
  • Holiday camps and sports programs
  • Schools who want to get a jump on early enrollment
  • Folks with gift certificates (think dance, swim lessons, summer camps etc)--grandparents and the like love these
  • Drop off centers so santas can get on about their shopping and holiday parties
  • An early jump on spring and summer activities and camps

Houston StrongHouston Strong and The KD's Participation in Houston's Recovery
We all have come to know, even as some of us are beginning to forget, the huge and far reaching impact of Hurricane Harvey. I took time this last weekend to drive around west Houston down roads and through neighborhoods and commercial centers where there was no hint of the hurricane at all only to turn right or left to find areas devastated by the flood, with the contents of people's homes on the curbs. One of The KD's long term employees was told last week that his aunt's house will not be suitable for habitation until late 2018.

Now, some four weeks after the storm's departure, comes the time for all of us small business people to get our bearings. No easy trick. Our challenge is to direct our efforts to serve the common needs of our neighbors and fellow Houstonians while concurrently serving our own business needs. Some of our customers will find themselves relocated to new neighborhoods, cities or states while some will just disappear. Every small business will have to replace lost customers and find new ones while supporting their current customers to help them weather the aftermath of the storm. So I guess its now time for all of us to get up, shake ourselves off and get to work. We've got a lot to do.

Here at The Kid's Directory, we are offering a number of programs and discounts to any of our customers whose business was adversely affected by the storm. Our thought is pretty simple: what revenue we may lose today as a consequence of our efforts to assist our fellow Houstonians, we hope to make up in spades by securing the loyalty and the business of customers on a long term basis. We've always figured that returning and consistent business provides the strongest foundation for the growth and stability of our little company.

So our Houston Strong special section is a case in point. It offers discounted ad prices for those folks marketing to a Houston marketplace in need of a 'hand up'. And for those of you who choose to advertise in this section, we will throw in a free listing in our Houston Strong listing (similar to the Elf's List) which will extend your reach to all three of our publications covering all of Houston. Your listing will also be featured prominently on our web site. It just makes good sense and its good business

Here are some ideas of who might want to include themselves in the Houston Strong section;

  • cat with signSchools with space and/or waived enrollment fees
  • After school activities and enrichment programs
  • Benefit events
  • Medical and/or mental care programs
  • Any business or entity offering fellow Houstonians relief

The KD will also continue to act as a Houston Food Bank and Houston SPCA collection station. Our deepest thanks to all of you who've brought stuff by our office. Keep 'em coming!

To help small businesses in Houston capture their share of the Holiday market rush, The KD will roll out special Community Themed Pages in each of our three publications. For the next issues of The Kid's Directory, we have initially selected Rice Village, Town Center in Sugar Land and Old Town Tomball. We are considering other focal points as well and would love your input.

Here's the deal; A themed page with 10 spaces set aside for businesses wanting to place a small ad to bolster up their Holiday sales. We'll charge a nominal fee of $275 inclusive of ad design and full color for both November and December. The themed pages would also be included on our website and in all our digital publications. We will also promote these pages on the cover of all of our publications. We expect that these spots will go quickly so don't daudle!

50 percent offSpecial Discounts Afoot for Summer Resident Camps
Summer resident camps, especially those that draw from a wide area (like all of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico) have a daunting marketing challenge. How do they get widespread print coverage over a large area that is cost effective? And their marketing efforts have to start early because most of their campers have committed to a camp by January or February. I am a huge supporter of sending kids off to summer camp. Great experiences for them and it offers a bit of a break for beleaguered parents.

So here is what we want to do to help all those great summer resident camps:
Camps can buy into the November edition and we will give them their December ad for half price. Every little bit helps...yes?

Little Beakers Elf's List exampleBe in Three Places at One Time with The Elf's List
Three markets and 1 website for 2 months, all for only $110 (in addition to your display ad!) Now in its third year of its latest iteration, The Elf's List allows those marketing into the the Holiday season the ability to triple their reach both in print and online for a nominal amount. You can check out last year's page by clicking on the little ad to the right.

Christmas in OctoberNews Flash: Santa is Terribly Confused...Time to Take Advantage
If you are on Santa's naughty list (defined as all of you out there who have never been with The KD or have not been with us since before October of 2016), then we are offering you our Christmas in October promotion. Consider this a bribe. It's a 3 month program where we will drop your ad rates by about 20%. So for the months of November, December and January you'll be riding in first class for the cost of a coach seat. You'll be part of the HGAG, the Spring and Summer Activity Guide and the Early Enrollment Guide. Contact us for more details before our deadline on October 12th.

Holiday Special Edition-
November and December are Wrapped into One Nice Package

In the spirit of getting all the family together over the holidays (we know it's always a tenuous idea because of that one crazy uncle), the November and December books are coming together to celebrate the holidays. We had such a great success with our special summer edition, so we thought we would offer the same idea over the holidays. Remember, it's the same pricing because it's the same great distribution both months.
